The 2018 Youth Opportunities projects have been announced.
Since the program was launched in 2012, Youth Opportunities has provided $10.4 million in funding to 211 projects across NSW. The 2018 Youth Opportunities projects are:

Assyrian Australian Association | Youth of South West Sydney | The project focuses on young people from Iraqi and Syrian backgrounds living in South Western Sydney. It will build leadership skills through workshops as well as support the transition of young people into life in Australia. Local events will be developed and implemented by young people, establish a Youth Advisory Committee for the Assyrian Resource Centre | $50,000 |
Bega Valley Shire Council | The Create & Make Crew (CMC) | The Bermagui Create & Make Crew will see young people aged 16-25 start their own creative businesses and take a lead role in a new Creative Makers space at Bermagui Library. The Crew will be supported by mentoring, short workshops and accredited training in new technologies, creative skills and business development. | $47,900 |
Byron Youth Service Inc | Beach Sleepers – Youth inclusion and creativity project addressing homelessness | This Beach Sleepers project fosters artistic expression, digital arts, mentorship, youth leadership and dialogues with young people to examine issues surrounding youth homelessness through media arts production. This process will amplify voices of young people and include them in decision making. | $43,000 |
Camden Council | Camden Youth Empowerment Project | The project focuses on leadership development and youth-led community events. Camden Youth Council and YMCA NSW Young Leaders Group will work collaboratively to deliver a series of youth-led events / skills development workshops within the Camden LGA, aiming to increase wider youth participation and engagement. The project aims to increase opportunities for young people to develop leadership skills/knowledge supporting them to become active change-makers in the local area. | $50,000 |
Carers NSW Limited | Who Cares, Wins | Who Cares Wins will provide opportunities for up to 20 young carers to share the differences in their lives with their peers. Using a Q&A type panel young carers will present at school assemblies across NSW. | $36,000 |
Dunghutti Elders Council (Aboriginal Corporation) | Dunghutti Youth and Cultural Connections | The Young people of Kempsey are calling out for cultural re-vitalisation and Elders are vital to building confidence and identity among young people. The Dunghutti Elders Council will host cultural workshops and activities that aim to strengthen cultural connections and identity while fostering youth participation, engagement in learning and leadership. | $29,860 |
Future Dreamers Girls Club Incorporated | Rhymes from the East | Young women from the Byron Shire will attend a creative retreat to create a dynamic hip-hop song and music video with an empowering message. Participants will lead and manage production including song construction, developing content, writing lyrics, performance, pre and post-production with experienced artist mentors. | $15,130 |
Glebe Youth Service Inc | Inner Sydney Aboriginal Youth Advisory Council | Inner Sydney Aboriginal Youth Advisory Council will give Aboriginal young people the opportunity to establish and run their own organisation, to design and drive local initiatives important to them, learn leadership skills and have their voices heard by local services including police, health services and government. | $23,010 |
Gymea Community Aid & Information Service Incorporated | CommUNITY- by young people for young people | CommUNITY is a project by young people for young people. Developing Youth Leaders in the community who in turn will bring young people together through interactive activities. The project aims to reduce social exclusion, bullying, harassment and racism. | $49,100 |
Health and Arts Research Centre Incorporated | Science Art Explorers | Science Art Explorers is a project lead by young people who live with complex health care needs. Participants will acquire new skills to explore and share their experience through science and arts initiatives. | $50,000 |
Information & Cultural Exchange Inc | New Age Noise | The New Age Noise project will provide opportunities for female, transgender, non-binary youth to produce, distribute and broadcast new music. New Age Noise will support 60 disadvantaged CALD young people from Western Sydney to create their own music label and develop creative skills in production, performance and media opportunities. | $49,524 |
Inverell Shire Council | Youth Opportunities for Inverell Shire | The Youth Opportunities for Inverell Shire project will engage over 2,500 youth in 20 activities designed by local youth for local youth. The project will include skill building workshops and free events to connect youth with cultural and recreational opportunities as well as showcase youth achievements. | $41,172 |
Madi Ethnic Community Welfare Association Incorporated | Youth for Change | The Youth for Change project will provide young people with opportunities for leadership training to run leadership camps and different events throughout the year. Participants will also complete Mental Health First Aid training. | $10,000 |
Moree Plains Shire Council | 2019 Moree Plains Shire Careers Expo | The Moree Plains Shire Youth Council in collaboration with a number of local agencies and groups will be hosting the 2019 Moree Plains Shire Careers Expo. The Careers Expo will inform, empower and educate young people about the opportunities available for career development. | $15,572 |
National Aboriginal Sporting Chance Academy (Aboriginal Corporation) | Cultural Leaders Program | The Cultural Leaders Program will support Aboriginal young people to connect with their culture. The project will take at risk young people on ‘Country’ to heal and to strengthen Aboriginal pride and identity. The project aims to reduce drug and alcohol misuse and to provide mental health education and support. | $49,000 |
National Rugby League Limited | NRL Youth Advocate Program (YAP) | The NRL YAP will unite 40 Youth Advocates aged 16-18 years who have previously participated in our social impact programs. These young people have showcased positive leadership skills and have expressed ideas on how to create positive change in their communities. We will inspire and equip participants to deliver these ideas. | $50,000 |
Phoenix House Youth Services Incorporated | BON APPETIT | The BON APPETIT project will reduce food waste and urban loneliness through cooking and sharing meals around a table in a welcoming and inclusive environment. Supplied with food donated from OZHarvest, young people will transform ordinary ingredients into extraordinary meals to renew, revive and connect with the rest of the community. | $40,000 |
Police Citizens Youth Clubs NSW – Blacktown | Reaching Your Dreams through Music | The project aims to engage young people from Western Sydney through the development of music. The project will provide mentoring by experienced producers/vocal coaches though rehearsals with the aim of enhancing skills, talent and developing leadership opportunities. PCYC Blacktown has an operating music studio. | $50,000 |
Port Stephens Council | Pathways and Possibilities | The Pathways and Possibilities (Research and Advocacy Project) will be developed by the Port Stephens Council Youth Advisory Panel (YAP) to define key priorities for the youth of Port Stephens aligned to Council’s current advocacy priorities. The project will encourage and promote the leadership and community development skills of youth. | $19,000 |
Project Youth Incorporated | Beats in the ‘Burbs | Beats in the ‘Burbs project will produce youth driven, locally run, live music events. Young people will work with youth workers, professional events planning and audio engineers and artists to gain skills required to work in performance and events management. | $50,000 |
Regional Youth Support Services Inc | YOP POP Ups – Peer to Peer Education Online and Offsite | YOP POP Ups Young Leaders will establish an online youth Hall of Fame identifying Central Coast talent in 4 specialist fields: * Young Professionals * Artists * Aboriginal Culture * Gaming & Social Media Targeted POP Up workshops will then be delivered throughout the region. They will be filmed for podcast online to engage a broader youth audience to highlight alternative employment pathways, activities and skills. | $49,710 |
Richmond Valley Council | Beats and Eats Festival – Growing Our Local Youth | The Beats and Eats Festival is a youth-driven community event where young people’s love for food is mixed with arts, culture and music. Casino’s Crawford Square will come alive with market stalls, local produce, cooking demonstrations and live music showcasing what young people in the Richmond Valley have to offer. | $17,500 |
Shopfront Arts Co.op. Ltd | ART PARK – Shopfront’s open space drop-in for Young People | ART PARK is a youth-led drop-in at Shopfront Arts Co-Op providing a context for young people to forge strong social connections and professional arts networks. Weekly, young people aged 15+ have access to arts resources, a supportive space, professional development training, mentorship and connection to a diverse network of peers. | $45,781 |
Singleton Council | Singleton Youth Festival | The Singleton Youth Festival project will be coordinated by Singleton’s youth team, Youth Voice, and Singleton Council. It will feature fun and creative activities, workshops and talks relating to topics and issues identified by Singleton’s youth. Youth Voice will also host an art competition with the theme ‘The 2019 Teen.’ | $50,000 |
Somali Welfare And Cultural Centre Incorporated | African Youth Create Better Future | African Youth Create Better Future project will support the cultural creativity of talented African youth through a range of cultural activities such as art, dance performance, music, video production, health and nutrition. | $38,000 |
Sutherland Shire Family Services Inc | EDYS TV and App | EDYS TV and the EDYS App will create an online platform for young people to engage and connect with their community and easily access local resources and support services. | $50,000 |
Sydney Story Factory Inc | Shalvey Bre(a)d | Driven by the young people of Shalvey ‘What’s in a name? ‘ is a home grown mini-series, showing the real Shalvey – the people, their pride, and the peace. The mini-series will challenge the negative stereotypes and perceptions about the community. | $45,550 |
Tamworth Regional Council | iGen Connect – Youth Activation | The iGen Connect – Youth Activation project is a Tamworth Regional Youth Council initiative. Youth Council members will plan and coordinate monthly events in Tamworth which will be accessible to all young people. The events will raise awareness on issues that impact our local young people. | $48,000 |
Waverley Council | Innovating Youth Work Experience (participants will re-invent title) | The project will pilot a volunteering strategy for young people to build skills and knowledge to lead the planning, development and implementation of creative arts and recreational events. This project-based learning aims to improve employability by building work skills, experience and connection with employer organisations to improve work experience opportunities. | $45,850 |
Women’s Activities & Self Help House Inc | Fierce and Fearless- Young Women’s Circles of Empowerment and Leadership | Fierce and Fearless is a young women’s leadership and empowerment project. The project will engage local young women to develop their self-worth, inner-strength, leadership and agency to help create a more gender equitable and safe world. | $49,500 |
Women’s Justice Network Inc | Healing from within | The Healing From Within project will support female young people aged 15 – 25 who have been or are at risk of entering the criminal justice system to reconnect with their culture through connecting with community elders and gaining self confidence to join local community events and organisations. | $50,000 |
Young Change Agents Limited | Youth-led social enterprises supporting youth mental health | This project will support Young Change Agents Alumni from across NSW to launch a product based social enterprise. These social enterprises have a common social purpose – youth mental health. The project will help them develop their enterprise skills and include a series of intensive workshops on product design and manufacturing, marketing and crowd funding. | $50,000 |
Young Men’s Christian Association Of Sydney | Manning Youth Action (MYA) streetgYm | The project will make free, youth-led recreation activities, workshops and events accessible to all young people in Taree and the Mid-North Coast. On a weekly basis streetgYm sessions involving popular youth recreation activities will offer important relationship building opportunities. Quarterly youth-led events will showcase local music and sporting talents in safe, youth-friendly locations. | $29,510 |
