Voting

Make your vote count

By voting in an election you are exercising your basic democratic right.  When you turn 18 it is compulsory in Australia that you vote in local, state and federal elections.

Voting in elections influences how things are run at all levels of government and getting the right person or party to represent you is important in making sure your best interests are served.

  • Rock Enrol is a joint initiative between Triple J and the Australian Electoral Commission to raise awareness of enrolling and voting, and encourage young Australians to enrol to vote. You can enrol to vote once you turn 17.

  • The State Electoral Office website contains information on enrolling to vote and election processes. There is also a Q&A section which covers a lot of voting issues.

  • Australian Electoral Commission gives you the Federal perspective.

  • A fact sheet on the changed 'Close of rolls' arrangements is available on the Australian Electoral Commission website

  • Enrolment forms can be found by visiting the Rock Enrol website or the AEC website or by phoning 13 23 26. Enrolment forms are also available at any Australian Post Office or AEC Office.

  • Research from the Youth Electoral Study, or the YES project, is available on the University of Sydney's website. The aims of YES are to investigate the attitudes of young Australians towards enrolling to vote, and to determine why so many do not enrol.
