How Government Works

In the Australian federal system there are three levels of government: Federal, State and Local. Each level of government is centred on a body (a parliament or a council) democratically elected by the people as their representatives. Each level of government has its own responsibilities, though many responsibilities are shared in various ways.

NSW Government

  • Learn about how the State Government works.
  • Find out who your local Member of Parliament is, who the current Ministers are and how to contact them.

Local Government

  • The Department of Local Government website can tell you which Council area you live in and how to contact them.

  • Many Councils now have Youth Councils to enable young people to have a say in services and events for young people in their local area. Contact your local Council to find out more.

  • The NSW State Government has released a Review of NSW Local Government Social Plans to help local councils better consult and involve young people in the decisions which affect them. The report aims to assist local councils to better identify ways they can involve young people aged 12 to 25 at a local government level.

Voting

  • Voting is your legal democratic right. In fact, when you turn 18 it is your legal responsibility. Voting is another way for you to have your say.
