2012 NSW Youth Advisory Council

Applications for the 2012 NSW Youth Advisory Council are now closed.

It is anticipated that an announcement of appointments to the Council will be made towards the end of January 2012.

The New South Wales Youth Advisory Council (YAC) was established in 1989 under the Youth Advisory Council Act, to ensure that young people participate in the development of Government policies and programs which concern them.

The Youth Advisory Council advises the NSW Government through the Minister responsible for Youth Affairs on:

  • Issues of concern to young people (aged 12-25) in NSW;
  • Government policies relating to young people; and,
  • Youth-related programs.

The Youth Advisory Council's advice to the Minister is confidential. 

The 2011 Youth Advisory Council's work has focussed on:

  • Youth health issues
  • Youth Engagement and Participation in government, the community and through digital media, and
  • Young drivers issues

The Council's work and advice is informed by members personal experiences, relevant research and consulting with young people.

In 2011 Council members have met and consulted with school students in Griffith, Temora and Wagga; TAFE students and young people in the Juvenile Justice system in Wagga; young people in the Illawarra who have experienced homelessness; local government youth advisory committees in Wagga and Fairfield; and young Muslims in Western Sydney. 

Council members have met with representatives from the Youth Action and Policy Association (YAPA) and the Community Relations Commission's Multicultural Youth Network.  The Council has also hosted a Facebook discussion with hundreds of young people on issues of importance to them.
